What is Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)?

Lets Talk About 'Cysts' :

  • Cyst is a small lump or bump that is usually felt just beneath the skin. A cyst can form in any part of the body including liver, kidneys, breast or ovaries

  • Poly means many and ‘Poly Cystic’ means many cysts. One cyst is not PCOS

  • Over 10 cysts of 5 -7 mm in Ovaries, a part of female reproductive organ where eggs are produced, is termed as Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome or in short PCOS.

What Are The Symptoms of PCOS?

The initial symptoms of PCOS that are usually seen are heavy or scanty menstrual blood flow, spotting during periods, irregular/delayed/early period cycle, long or short period duration, pain in the abdomen, and abnormal white discharge.

What Are Side Effects Of PCOS?

If PCOS is not treated in time, it leads to other complications such as abnormal weight gain, excessive hair fall, skin acne, skin pigmentation or darkening, Hirsutism (Uncontrolled growth in facial hair), infertility resulting in difficulty to conceive.

Who Is Affected by PCOS?

Statistics indicate that in India, 1 in every 5 women below the age of 35 years is said to have PCOS. It also affects over 10 million women globally.

What Causes PCOS?

According to Ayurveda the main causes of PCOS are a faulty diet, sedentary lifestyle and stress. The root causes of PCOS are as follows:

  • Metabolism or digestive power (Pitta) plays the most important role in converting any food we eat in to nutritional juices.

  • Weak metabolism reduces our ability to properly digest food resulting in undigested food matter, a sticky mucus-like substance called ‘AMA’ which is highly toxic in nature.

  • AMA mixes with blood and reaches ovaries where female eggs are produced every month.

  • When AMA comes in contact with hyper-sensitive female eggs, it disturbs its natural growth process called Ovulation and these immature eggs gets trapped in to ovaries and develop in multiple cysts or medically stated as Poly Cysts in Ovaries.

How To Treat PCOS?

Modern science commonly prescribes treatment for PCOS like Hormonal replacement therapy, Metformin Tablets generally prescribed to treat Diabetes or Cyst Removal Surgery.
These treatments may offer fast relief from PCOs symptoms. But it does not eliminate the root cause of this disorder.
